BEYOND THE PHYSICAL SPACE
The Department of Interior Architecture at HEAD – Genève has been investigating the potential of digital spaces in virtual reality since 2018. A number of projects have been carried out, leading to the conclusion that the experiences of designing and inhabiting virtual architecture inside VR can offer a meaningful layer to the department's education program.
The atelier of Simon Husslein introduces an abstract design approach to virtual spaces. The developed environments explore new archetypes of place beyond skeuomorphic virtual architecture. Instead of mimicking known typologies of physically built structures, the spaces aim to create completely new experiences. Some are based on impossible stuctures, some feel as if they were alive. Through their new character, the environments can be easily identified as virtual and therefore accepted and enjoyed for what they are. The designs are optimised with an emphasis on emotional well-being and atmospheric quality.
